OutDoor Advertising Billboards Take On A Tree
The advertising industry has been a source of entertainment for me for a large part of my life, I consider myself an armchair advertising fan. Those of you who discovered this green advertising site from one of my more general advertising sites will learn that the environment has become a major issue for me personally. This site applauds environmentally friendly, green advertising and the businesses that have chosen to care enough for the environment, and express it through their advertising. On the other side are those companies and advertising firms that take advantage of the term "green", or those who make false green and environmental claims, also known as green washing.
Green World Ads recently came across a shocking story about Outdoor Advertising company and a couple of beautiful Siberian Elm trees in Toronto, Canada. The image below is of the billboard location operated by Pattison Outdoor at 1877 Dundas street West, notice the Siberian Elm trees.
The next photo was taken just a few short weeks later, you will see what Outdoor advertising did to those Siberian Elm trees.
Pattison decided that their billboard was more important than the trees, the environment, and the law so they cut down one tree, then trimmed down the other perfectly healthy beautiful trees. The following images show exactly what was done in favor of the billboard. The smaller tree, which was not protected by the Tree Protection By-Law was totally destroyed. I must note, that we are are not just venting because a tree was cut down here, what Outdoor Billboards did was 100% illegal and people like Rami Tabello made them accountable for their actions. I call that Green Power baby.
Although nothing can be done to bring back those Siberian Elm trees, thanks to the hard work by the volunteers at illegal signs they had the billboard removed! A lesson learned for the Outdoor advertising company. Our environment is still more important that any billboard no matter how much much money is at stake.
Below are the before and after images, the after you will notice that the billboard is gone.
We can keep our world green and beautiful, we just need to work harder at it. I still love advertising and even a nice billboard with a great ad on it, but I will not accept firms that this.
A special thank you to Rami Tabello at illegalsigns.ca for the images and your hard work.
